As I look to 2020 I am working on identifying more capsule inspired parts of my life. With the holidays around the corner it only made sense for me to create a capsule inspired gift guide to do just that!
The desire for slow living is never more present on my mind than during the holiday season. The vision of a capsule life is on my mind. Copper pots of cinnamon sticks, clove, and orange peel simmer on the stove. A wood fire crackles at my hearth. I’m curled up in a cozy chair with one of the 25 books I’ve been meaning to read this year, wearing a hand-knit sweater and staring at my homemade garland adorning my thoughtfully decorated home, all while my children play quietly at my feet.
HA!!
OR does this sound more like it : the anxiety ridden freight train called CHRISTMAS is barreling at you as you try to pull it all together in time for the school and work holiday parties, (which seem to start earlier every year!), the last minute shipping deadlines to your out of state in-laws, the lights show that you have been meaning to see for the past 3 years, and the actual BIG day itself when all is supposed to be calm and bright?!
I’ve been there. In fact, that is usually what my holiday season looks like despite my earnest intentions every year to finally make it a slow lived, capsule life, traditions made, remember-it-forever kind of Christmas.
ENTER the Capsule inspired Life. I have been playing with the idea of expanding the idea of a “Capsule” beyond my closet into every area of my life. The basis being this: curate the essential pieces for each season and then create room to sprinkle in the fun and flavor, all while carefully spending my time and money on quality and memories I know will last – so that I might say no to most and yes to the best.
To me, applying this “capsule life” mindset to the holiday season looks like this:
Don’t get me wrong… I LOVE GIFTS. In fact it is one of my main love languages in how I express my affection for people in my life. But what I have learned is that it is much better to give one very thoughtful piece with a well thought out handwritten letter, than to give many items that have less meaning. Also, a useful gift that is both lovely, well made, and “right up that person’s alley” will be used and loved for years to come.
So, I have done some of the hard work looking discovering capsule inspired gifts for you and curated a small selection of my favorite things I’ll be giving this season. These items are all vetted personally by me, and I vouch for their quality and price point. With the inspiration of a capsule wardrobe and life I tried to include items I knew were ethically made, responsibly sourced, or from local makers / designers / brands that I know and trust.
