Okay okay, I know that title is a bit drastic BUT having a Capsule Wardrobe and simplified closet for myself and my kids has been such a game changer for our family. What is a capsule wardrobe you ask?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that won’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.

Why create a capsule wardrobe?

Less clothes equal less laundry, less options mean less time figuring out what to wear. When you love the pieces you have and every single one of them was chosen for your capsule wardrobe with a purpose and is the proper fit – it makes getting dressed a breeze!

I was originally inspired by Marie Kondo’s often wardrobe-focused tidying technique ( have you watched her Netflix special yet?!) and Matilda Kahl’s choice to wear one outfit to work for three years, I know I am not the only one who is intrigued by a streamlined closet. Besides, who doesn’t have and resent a large selection of unworn, often low-quality items? I know I was guilty of this for way too many years. That is why I decided to integrate a capsule wardrobe into my life!

ENTER THE CAPSULE WARDROBE.

I have been trying to create a version of a capsule wardrobe for myself for the past few years with varying degrees of success, however, this past year is the time I truly committed to the idea and its been amazing. I have a 40 piece capsule per season ( does not include undergarments, workout clothes, pajamas or bathing suits. ) In Atlanta, there are pretty much 3 seasons – Moderate Winter, Hot and Humid, and HOLY CRAP ITS HOT. So my capsule might look pretty different from someone who actually experiences all 4 seasons – however, you can easily swap in and out what pieces work for you. Maybe you don’t need 4 pairs of shorts, and opt for an extra cardigan or two in your capsule instead.

40 pieces is not a hard and fast capsule wardrobe rule, however I have found it to be generous enough to include variety yet still a streamlined and reduced closet.

Start by getting rid of anything you don’t absolutely LOVE – aka Marie Kondo that closet! Then move forward with making sure you’ve got basics and staple pieces for your current season. Then the fun can start as you create your very own capsule wardrobe and can begin adding in the mix and match items.

And make sure to donate or sell your old pieces.
